At a press event today, Apple announced that it will be releasing the iOS 6 software update to the general public on September 19. iOS 6, which has been in testing with developers over the past several months, features improvements to Siri, integration with Facebook, the new Passbook app, Shared Photo Streams, and more. The biggest new feature coming in iOS 6 is the new Maps app, which has been developed in-house by Apple, allowing for turn-by-turn navigation and 3D imagery.

iOS 6 will be available as a free download for iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2 and 4th-generation iPod Touch users. The new iPhone 5 will be shipping with iOS 6 pre-installed.
