The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) has been gaining a lot of attention over the past few weeks. It aims to combat online copyright infringement and piracy (just as the name implies), but in turn gives corporate companies, namely ISPs, too much power. The bill is currently in debate at the United States House of Representatives and has its fair share of opposers, despite the announcement that DNS blocking would be removed from the act.

Now, a number of the Internet's most popular websites are pledging to go dark on Wednesday, January 18 to protest SOPA. Among the participants are Reddit, Minecraft and Red 5 Studios. Red 5 Studios, which developed the shooter game Firefall have even gone as far as canceling their appearance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June. The conference is run by the Entertainment Software Association, which supports SOPA.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has even announced that the collaborative Internet encyclopedia may be taking the website down for part of the day to protest their opposition to SOPA. Nothing official has come from Wikipedia, however.
