Amazon to launch tablet in August or September

Amazon is ready to begin selling tablet computers to compete with the iPad and other Android devices as soon as August, according to DigiTimesб═who cites Taiwan-based component makers.

Amazon is poised to step into tablet PCs and will launch models as son as August-September, with targeted global sales of four million units for 2011, according to Taiwan-based component makers.

The tablets are to have processors developed by Texas Instruments and touch screens by Wintek. In addition, Amazon is said to provide streaming movie services for the users of its tablets.

The report notes that Amazon is aiming to release the new devices in the U.S. prior to Thanksgiving to reach the annual peak sales period. A European launch is also expected before the holidays at the end of this year. Amazon expects to ship 700,000-800,000 unites per month.

Exciting, I've a strong feeling that if anyone is to compete with Apple at the moment it's going to be someone like Amazon with their experience with the kindle, power for cloud services and marketing expertise.
