Engadget is noting today that one of their readers has discovered that the Android OS logo may have made a similar appearance well before it was released by Google, in a game called Atari Lynx back in 1990.

The Android logo bares a shocking resemblance to a character logo in the 1990 game "Gauntlet: The Third Encounter." The character sports a logo very similar to Android OS' one. What's more shocking is that the character's name itself was "Android."
The shape of the Android logo has been modified by Google, adding a strip to separate the head and body, along with making the body less rounded. Despite the fact that the logo was modified, it stills bares a resemblance that is noticeable to the tech world.
It's currently unknown whether Google wanted to keep this a secret, or if they really do have licensing to use this character's logo as the Android OS logo. While unlikely, it could be that the two are a coincidence. Nonetheless, it should be interesting to see how Google will handle this, especially if they used the logo illegally.
Google has yet to comment on this discovery.
