Apple will be holding their annual media event on September 1st, following the invitations that began being sent out today. So, what can you expect to be announced? Here's a roundup:
New iPod touch
This one's a no-brainer. With so many leaks over the past few months, it a guarantee that Apple will be releasing a new iPod touch. The new iPod touch will sport a front-facing camera and FaceTime integration via an email address, and possible a rear-facing camera. It will have a design similar to the current one, but a new rumor is showing it will be slightly longer and thinner. The next-generation iPod touch will have a high-resolution "Retina" display, similar to the iPhone 4. It will also have an improved battery, A4 processor running at 1GHz, 512 MB of RAM, internal microphone, and possibly an FM transmitter (similar to the current-generation iPod nano). Expect the price to be the same at now. No word on a release date.
Refreshed iPod nano, shuffle; Classic will possibly be discontinued
While there haven't been too many rumors about the other iPod's in the lineup, the iPod nano, shuffle, and classic, we can tell you that Apple will be refreshing the iPod nano. It's been rumored that the next-generation iPod nano will be smaller than the current one and because of this, lack a physical click wheel. One rumor claims that Apple will be discontinuing the iPod shuffle because the iPod nano will be smaller, but we don't expect this to happen. Finally, expect the iPod classic to be discontinued, or have a very minor price drop. There's nothing Apple can really refresh it with.
iOS 4.1 for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
Following the announcement of new iPod's, Apple will announce the next update to their mobile OS, iOS 4.1. iOS 4.1 has been in beta for about two months now, with three beta's seeded already. iOS 4.1 will have performance and stability improvements, bug fixes, some minor new features, and will finally fix the proximity sensor issue iPhone 4 users have been reporting.
The first developer beta for iOS 4.1 for the iPad will most likely be released, but the final, public copy will most likely not be announced.
Apple TV
New Apple TV rumors have picked up steam over the past few weeks. It has been rumored that Apple will be re-branding the Apple TV to "iTV," the same name it was given when the product was first launched. The new iTV (if that's what it's going to be called) will be running iOS with it's own App Store, lack physical storage (and will be heavily oriented towards cloud storage), be able to use an iPad as a remote control, will lack 1080p/1080i playback, and will sport Apple's A4 processor chip. The price point of the new Apple TV is expected to be $99.
iTunes
Apple announces a new version of iTunes annually, so when September 1st comes along, you can expect see see iTunes 10/X (whatever they'll call it). It will be a completely re-written application for both Windows and Mac OS X. Focusing on the Mac OS X side of things, it will be written in Cocoa, the native coding language of Mac OS X (instead of the current Carbon coding), it will be 64-bit compatible for Snow Leopard users, and it will se huge improvements in performance and stability. As for new features, expect to see a polished user interface, better social media integration into the entire app, not just the Store. Also, expect to see improved radio station support. The iTunes app in general will be much more lightweight.
Do NOT expect to see iTunes split up into multiple applications, such as one for music, one for syncing an iDevice, and one for playing movies. iTunes will remain one application.
iTunes Cloud-based storage
Apple purchased a company called Lala Media a little time back, and ever since then, people have been expecting a cloud-based/streaming content service built-in to iTunes. Or, to put it more simply - the ability to put all of your music, movies, TV shows, and podcasts on a server and stream it to your computer to save disk space.
Rumors of an announcement of this type of service have been mixed, but I don't think you'll be seeing this announced on September 1st.
99-cent TV show rentals in the iTunes Store
It was rumored just yesterday that Apple is currently in negotiations with several TV networks to bring 99-cent TV show rentals to the iTunes Store. You can expect this to be announced also on September 1st.
iLife '11 and iWork '11
While we're not sure whether Apple will call it iLife '10 or iLife '11, you may see some announcement of an update to the iLife product. It has been previously rumored that Apple will be introducing the next version of iLife with a brand-new application, which could tie into iOS app development (which makes sense for an announcement at this event). Not too much else is known about iLife '11.
As for iWork '11, there have been absolutely no new rumors regarding it. But, we can still speculate at what it will include. Keep in mind that there's a VERY slim chance Apple will discuss iWork '11, but it's still possible. iWork '11 will most likely be written in 64-bit, taking advantage of Snow Leopard's capabilities and we'll most likely see iWork.com leave beta.
What not to expect
Don't expect any announcements about a CDMA iPhone. Don't expect anything about Apple's other software suite's (such as Aperture, Final Cut etc.). Don't expect any announcements about Mac hardware or any next-generation iPad.
