Along with releasing the fastest Google Chrome version ever, which is 35% faster than the previous, yesterday, Google also released a video showing how fast Chrome really is, comparing its speed to a potato gun, sound waves and lightening.
Each scene was shot with a high speed camera, at 1920 x 1080 and up to 2700fps. Google claims on their YouTube video description that this video was “filmed at actual web page rendering times,” including a “15Mbps Internet connection.“
However, a Neowin.net forum user noticed something peculiar in one of the website's URL visited in the video. It turns out the video is a fake because, during the Chrome vs. potato launcher scene, the potato zooms by the browser loading the web page, but when looking at the address box, the URL is actually a file hosted locally on the computer, and not an actual web page.
It is still unknown whether the other two scenes were also shot with a local version of a web page.
Shame on you, Google! Trying to make us think that your browser is faster than a potato launcher - yeah, we all know that's impossible.
UPDATE: Google has contacted Neowin, explaining why they chose to use a local webpage instead of the live one. Chrome vs. potato launcher and Chrome vs. lightening was shot using a local webpage and Chrome vs. sound was shot using a live Pandora.com webpage.
For the Chrome Browser vs. Potato film, we used a version of the web page allrecipes.com that is accessible when logged in. About four hours into the Potato Gun shoot we decided to use a locally loaded version of the web page to enable more precise synchronization with the potato gun. We finally got the shot we were hoping for after 51 takes.
...
For Chrome Browser vs. Lightning, we used a locally loaded version of weather.com that was legally approved for use in this video (and all the standard website permissions procedures that goes into making videos!)
...
For Chrome Browser vs. Sound, we loaded an artist page from Pandora.com, a streaming internet radio service directly off the web on a 15Mbps internet connection.
Google has also posted an update to the video, describing the way the videos were shot. Google also mentioned that they set it up so that despite the fact they are local webpages, they still represent the same loading time as live webpages.
