According to industry analyst, David Mercer of StrategyAnalytics, Sony’s PlayStation 3 will have sold more units than Nintendo’s Wii, by 2013.
According to the blog post he wrote, there will be an estimated 76 million Wii’s used worldwide by the end of 2010. However, he went on to say that there are signs “that the Wii has peaked in terms of console sales, and its installed base will begin to decline after 2011.” On the other hand, he believes that the PlayStation 3 will hit 127 million users worldwide, by the end of 2013, appose to the 103 million Wii users.
Mercer believes this because of Sony’s (and Microsoft’s) plan to add motion-based controllers over the next year, as well as Sony’s plan to add 3D support for the PS3 this summer.
Finally, he gives some statistics about console sales. After a 6% decline in the sales last year, he says that they “are predicting global console sales of 47.5 million, a 9% decline…The Wii will account for most of that decline: sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 are predicted to increase.”
